How do I renew library items?

*This information was taken verbatim from CountyCat-Milwaukee County Federated Library System's online library catalog, on November 22, 2006.*

Renewing Items

Library users can renew library materials online through your patron account or by telephone (277-0183).

Are All Materials on CountyCat Renewable?

No. Most library materials that circulate for three weeks may be renewed one time for up to an additional three weeks. A few, rare, exceptions may apply even for three week materials, such as holiday books (which may be unrenewable at holiday time). Also, items on hold for other patrons will not renew. Some libraries in the system also allow a one time renewal on seven day materials. This policy varies from library to library. Contact your local library if you have questions regarding the renewal policy for seven day materials at your library. Three day materials are not renewable anywhere.

Renew items through your patron account

You can renew materials in the comfort and convenience of your home/office and/or online at the library. However, if you owe too much money, your library card has expired, it is too soon to renew the material, or you have already renewed the material once you will not be able to use this service. Eligible three week material can be renewed from 7 days before the due date. Eligible seven day material can be renewed 3 days before the due date. Whenever you renew, you will be given an additional loan period equal to the original loan period. You can renew materials online if they are overdue, but any fines accrued will be added to your account.

From within your patron account:

  1. Click on the Checked Out Items button.
  2. You may wish to click on the Sort by Due Date button to show which items are due the soonest.
  3. You will see a list of your currently checked out items and their due dates.
  4. Click in the boxes to the left of the titles that you want to renew. Checkmarks will appear in all of the boxes that you click in.
  5. Click on the "Renew Selected Items" button.
  6. The STATUS for all of the renewed items will say "RENEWED Now due ___DATE___" . The new due date will be three weeks from the day that you renew the item, not three weeks from the original due date.
  7. You can renew some items that are overdue. This will stop fines from accruing.

There are many reasons why an item may not be renewed, including :

1. Too many renewals. You have already renewed this material previously
2. Item is not eligible for renewal
3. You are trying to renew the material too soon.
4. Another patron has a hold on the item.
5. The item is overdue, and can't be renewed.

Patron Self-Renewal by Telephone - (277-0183)

In order to be able to use the Telephone Renewal System, you must have a touchtone phone. Have with you your library barcode as well as the barcodes of the items you wish to renew. Follow the voice prompts to renew items.

If the item barcode you entered is for an eligible item the system will tell you that barcode has been renewed. The new due date will be spoken for you.

If you are not allowed a renewal for a particular item, the system will tell you that barcode cannot be renewed at this time. Please contact the library. There are many reasons why an item may not be renewed, including :

1. Too many renewals. You have already renewed this material previously
2. Item is not eligible for renewal
