Databases for Shorewood Residents
 
BadgerLink is a project of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning.  The Department of Public Instruction currently contracts with two vendors (EBSCO and ProQuest) to provide access to articles from thousands of newspaper and periodical titles, image files, and other reference materials. Through EBSCO, users can search over 6,000 magazine and journal titles, over half of which are available in full-text. ProQuest provides access to a dozen Wisconsin newspapers in addition to over 500 regional, national and international publications.

For remote access please note: If your Internet service provider is registered with the state for BadgerLink, you will be able to access BadgerLink directly. If you are asked for a username and password, that means that your provider is not registered.  With your library card you can access a magazine database through EBSCO, and a newspaper database through ProQuest

 

BadgerCat is an online catalog that includes the holdings of nearly 500 Wisconsin libraries. In addition, users can expand their searching to all of WorldCat, which is a worldwide union catalog of over 93 million records created and maintained by more than 60,000 libraries.

 

EBSCOhost is an online reference system. It offers a variety of proprietary full text databases and popular databases from leading information providers.  The comprehensive databases range from general reference collections to specially designed, subject-specific databases for public, academic, medical, corporate and school libraries.  Through EBSCO, users can search over 6,000 magazine and journal titles, over half of which are available in full-text.

 

ProQuest provides full text of 300+ U.S. and international news sources. Includes coverage of 150+ major U.S. and international newspapers and also Ethnic NewsWatch, an interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) and comprehensive full text database of newspapers, magazines and journals from ethnic, minority and native presses.

 

Standard and Poor's NetAdvantage is a comprehensive source of business and investment information, offering on-line access to Standard & Poor’s independent research, data and commentary on stocks, bonds, funds, and industries.  NetAdvantage includes access to Standard and Poor's Outlook, Stock Reports, Bond Reports, Corporation Records, Mutual Fund Reports, Industry Surveys, and Register of Corporations, Directors and Executives. 

 

ReferenceUSA is an Internet-based reference service from infoUSA.  The ReferenceUSA database contains detailed information on more than 12 million U.S. businesses; 102 million U.S. residents; 683,000 U.S. health care providers.

 

World Book Online includes more than 26,000 articles as well as more than 12,000 pictures and maps, and 7,000 links to editor-approved Web sites useful in helping students constructively explore topics further. This resource is continuously updated to include new and important developments relevant to students and their families.

 

Literature Resource Center provides access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline. Combining Gale Group's core literary databases in a single online service, the Literature Resource Center covers more than 120,000 novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, and other writers, with in-depth coverage of 2,500 of the most-studied authors.

 

Ancestry Library Edition has approximately 4,000 databases including key collections such as U.S. federal census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930; the Map Center containing more than 1,000 historical maps; American Genealogical Biographical Index (over 200 volumes), Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage (over 150 volumes), The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1630, Social Security Death Index, WWI Draft Registration Cards, Federal Slave Narratives, and a strong Civil War collection. Magill's Medical Guide
Magill's Medical Guide covers diseases, disorders, treatments, procedures, specialties, anatomy, biology, and other medical issues. It is an up-to-date and easy-to-use compendium of medical information suitable for student research as well as use by general readers, including patients and caregivers.

 

HeritageQuest can be used by researchers to find their ancestors, trace their paths across America, and learn what life was like in the areas where they settled. HeritageQuest Online is an essential collection of unique material for both genealogical hobbyists and professionals, with coverage dating back to the late 1700s. Along with U.S. federal census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930, it offers more than 20,000 book titles, including nearly 8,000 family histories and over 12,000 local histories, in addition to the more than 250 primary source documents such as tax lists, city directories, probate records, and more.

 

Biography Resource Center combines award-winning biographies from respected Gale Group sources. Biography Resource Center also includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender, or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search. 

 

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center draws on the acclaimed social issues series published by Greenhaven Press, as well as core reference content from other Gale and Macmillan Reference USA sources to provide a complete one-stop source for information on social issues. Access viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to websites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.

 

Testing and Education Reference Center can help you in many ways.  Taking a college entrance or licensing exam? Looking for a college or graduate school? Need help finding scholarships? Use this database to search thousands of college and graduate school entries. Identify scholarships that meet their financial needs. Take on-line practice tests and use test prep eBooks to obtain your education goals.

 

NoveList is a fiction database that provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and much more for over 120,000 fiction titles. It also includes other content of interest to fiction readers, such as Author Read-alikes, Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks, and Feature Articles. For school media specialists and teachers there are Standards-Based Thematic Units and Picture Book Extenders, as well as specific teaching guides for using fiction in the classroom.

 

LitFinder is international in scope, covers all time periods, and contains a wealth of primary literature content, including more than 126,500 full-text poems, 850,000 poem citations and excerpts, 5,000 full-text short stories, 2,800 full-text essays, 1,800 full-text speeches, and 1,000 full-text plays. LitFinder also includes biographies, work summaries, photographs, and a glossary. A subject navigator provides over 10,000 subject headings, and basic and advanced search modes allow users to search by keyword, author, subject, work title, work date, nationality, gender, timeline, and more.

 

NetLibrary provides access to E-books via the Milwaukee County Federated Library System's (MCFLS) subscription to NetLibrary and are available to be read online through a Web browser at any public library in Milwaukee County.

The MCFLS collection of NetLibrary ebooks can also be accessed and read remotely by any library card holder in the MCFLS system. You must first create a personal account. Creating your account must be done within any public library in Milwaukee County. When at the library, please follow the instructions found at Account Tips . Creating this account will allow you to access ebooks remotely. Library staff will assist you, if needed.
